the story of the moving image @ acmi, fed square
/ACMI has to have the BEST hands on experiences for kids in Melbourne’s CBD. The Story of the Moving Image is an interactive and FREE exhibition all about screen culture. This captivating exhibition takes you and the family through the evolution of animation, cinematography, video games and the silver screen.
Begin your tour with the classic puppets and basic animation techniques before learning about iconic costumes, movie sets, sketches, clips, contemporary art and SO MUCH MORE. Our favourite has to be the spinning zoetrope. This incredible display uses strobe lighting and motion to make the hilarious scene come to life - we watched it over 5 times!
The exhibition is very hands-on and has many ways in which you can jump in and participate in the fun. Head inside the sound booth and be in charge of the sound effects in the foley studio. We love dancing away and creating our very own flip book (check Mamma’s moves in the 3D looking image below) and playing some of worlds most iconic arcade games.
The Story of the Moving Image is a great hands on experience, perfect for most ages (probably 4+). It is a little dark in this exhibition, so stick together as a team and enjoy the whole experience.
