mamma's tips for heading to the footy
/For this Mamma, some of her most treasured family memories involve heading to watch the footy with the family. From being freezing cold in the stands, to avoiding burning your tongue on a hot jam donut, to cheering on our favourite players, it was a hallmark of Mamma’s childhood.
So it is right about time to bring the kids into the fold and see the big kids play on the big stage. Very quickly Mamma learned some hot tips to help make it a successful experience (despite what the result is on the scoreboard).
Snacks. It really does go with out saying, but the more snacks the better especially if you want to be able to last the entire match
Arrive close to match starting time so to avoid too much waiting - but don’t miss your team running through the banner - its a real highlight!
It can be loud. Ear muffs or just headphones for the kids can help with the extra noises from the crowd (or your over enthusiastic supporter that is sitting nearby).
If it is your first time at an AFL match, consider heading to a game that includes an interstate team as crowd sizes are generally smaller. Marvel is a smaller venue too which makes you feel closer to the action. A seat higher up is great too for being able to see. We avoid the bottom level entirely.
Plan your strategy for parking, as sometimes the walk to the ground can be epic. Catching the train is often the best option (but you may wish to leave the game early to avoid the crowds when leaving - or hang about in the city a little longer while the crowd disperses).
Take your footy experiences in stages. You can start with watching a training session, a local match and even an AFLW game at at smaller stadium.
It is such a Melbourne tradition to dig out your scarf and cheer on your team. Mamma can’t wait to do this more often.
For the footy experience that is more hands on and without the crowds, head to the National Sports Museum at the MCG (they are just closed on game day)
