65,000 years: a short history of australian art @ potter museum of art, parkville

On now at the Potter Museum of Art is an expansive and inspiring exhibition of over 400 works of art that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples, resistance, culture, knowledge and stories, while also confronting the dark truth of a brutal colonisation. This is an awesome exhibition with very striking works of art.

Spanning over three levels, each exhibition room displays a different set of artists, areas, knowledges, and perspectives. The artworks include artefacts, woven sculptures, video, photography, contemporary painting, bark paintings, portraits, and more. Visually stunning, interesting and thought-provoking.

The Museum has some engaging resources for little and big kids visiting the exhibition. So you can learn while marvelling at the famous paintings of Emily Kam Kngwarray, and Albert, and Vincent Namatjira. Plus, more info can be explored through the QR codes available for each room.

All of the exhibition is family friendly, except for one exhibition room which is for over 18’s due to the upsetting nature of the content as Melbourne University examines their own participation in a horrible history. But don’t worry, your kids won’t accidentally tumble into this room - the red door has a Museum attendant ushering suitable observers inside.

Mamma highly recommends a visit to this exhibition so you too can expand your knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the unimaginably ancient connection to Country and culture Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to what has only recently been referred to as, Australia.
