play school @ ACMI, fed square
/Mamma grew up with Play School, so seeing it brought to life at ACMI is a little bit magical. The Play School: Come and Play! exhibition invites your little ones to step right inside the colourful world of this iconic Aussie show, and it’s just as joyful and nostalgic as you’d hope. Think music, imagination, familiar characters and plenty of hands-on fun — the kind of experience that has kids wide-eyed while Mamma quietly reminisces about childhood mornings in front of the TV.
Your minis will be encouraged to dive straight into the action — climbing aboard the famous Rocket Clock, peeking through the iconic Play School windows and even pretending to be a presenter or camera operator. Along the way they’ll spot some very familiar faces too, including Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima, Humpty and Kiya. Watching kids discover these characters in real life is honestly one of the sweetest parts.
The exhibition has been designed especially with little visitors in mind (best suited to preschoolers), with colourful interactive zones that encourage creativity, movement and storytelling. The play sessions run for around 30 minutes which is just the right amount of time for young attention spans — and makes it easy to pair with a wander around Federation Square, a city lunch or another family adventure while you’re in the CBD.
Play School: Come and Play! runs until 12 July 2026 at ACMI in Fed Square.
The experience is free, but sessions are ticketed and bookings are essential as numbers are limited for each play session. If you’ve got a Play School fan at home (or you’re feeling a little nostalgic yourself), this is one city outing that’s guaranteed to bring a big smile to the whole family.
