pharaohs at the NGV, melbourne

The ancient world of the Egyptians has been an endless source of fascination for many; the pyramids, King Tutankhamen, ancient hieroglyphics, treasures and the Gods. A time filled with mystery and intrigue.

Straight from the British Museum, Pharaoh is now on display at Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria. This unbelievable display of artefacts from this ancient civilization is quite special and not to be missed.

Mamma says the showcase takes up the entire lower ground floor of the NGV and covers a vast dynasty of ancient Egyptian kings and queens. Beautifully curated, it feels like you are moving through tunnels and tombs between each room. The clever lighting, with pyramid shapes and shadows, leads into the main space that is breathtaking on arrival. Here, you will find the statues of the lion goddess Sekhmet, some originally excavated from the banks of the Nile. It’s stunning.

There is a lot to see in this exhibition. Each piece has an information plaque explaining what the object is and the estimated time it was made—most over 3000 years old!

Give yourself a couple of hours to digest and explore the statues, jewellery, sarcophagus, objects, architecture, and the lives of the people who built them.

This is a gifted collaboration with NGV.
