boulder risk-play park, southbank
/There is almost NOTHING that is ordinary at the coolest playground to open in Melbourne. At first glance, it certainly looks like a bunch of builders have forgotten to finish their work! There are no even surfaces, no smooth hand rails and lots of hazards to keep an eye on. But that is exactly the point. This playground is full of challenges, obstacles and risk. Firstly the park is full of boulders and EVERYTHING is designed to be climbed on. It is a whole heap of fun!
There are wooden beams, steel ladders, ropes, slack lines and random hand holds everywhere - with great little details hidden in cracks, under boulders - who knew you could attach things with bubblegum! Of course, the playground isn’t all problematic. The flooring is in fact rubber matting (it’s hard to get your head around at first as you do a little bounce as you step onto the bluestone looking matting), there’s a set of swings and a couple of slides, even a rough sand pit.
This playground won’t be for everyone, but if you have little climbing daredevils - good luck trying to leave this one!
2025 update: On our recent visit, this place was packed with families and although it was busy (it was a public holiday) my favourite part - was that everyone was involved with the play. Parents were helping kids to manage challenging spots, they were hunting for the hidden creatures in the rocks and Mamma’s bigger kids were having the time of their lives - and we are almost “too old” for some playgrounds! This is a definite MUST VISIT playground!
